From Application to Offer Letter: A Realistic Hiring Timeline in Nigeria (And What’s Normal vs. a Red Flag)

Applied two weeks ago and heard nothing?

Before you panic — or write off the opportunity, here’s what a normal hiring timeline actually looks like, and where the real red flags are.

One of the most common messages we get from job seekers is some version of: “I applied two weeks ago, is it over?” And from employers: “Is it normal that our top candidate hasn’t replied to the offer yet?” Both sides are usually just missing a shared picture of what a realistic hiring timeline looks like in Nigeria.

Stage 1

Application to first screening. For most roles, expect anywhere from three days to two weeks before you hear back, depending on how many applications the employer received and how actively they’re filling the role. If it’s been three weeks with no acknowledgement, it’s fair to send one polite follow-up.

Stage 2

Screening to interview. After you’ve had an initial phone or WhatsApp screening call, a first interview is typically scheduled within one to two weeks. If a company goes quiet for over three weeks after a positive-feeling screening call, that’s worth a gentle check-in, not immediate worry.

Stage 3

Interview to decision. This is where processes vary most. A single-round process might decide within a week; a multi-stage process for a senior role can reasonably take two to four weeks. What matters more than the exact timeframe is whether the employer told you what to expect — “we’ll be in touch by 2026” — and honoured it.

Stage 4

Decision to offer letter. Once a decision is made, a complete offer letter should typically follow within three to five business days. A verbal “you got the job” that drags on for two or three weeks without a written offer is one of the clearest red flags in the entire process.

Red flags for job seekers: total silence beyond three weeks with no acknowledgement at all; repeated last-minute interview reschedules; requests for payment at any stage of hiring; verbal offers that never arrive in writing.

Red flags for employers: candidates who go silent after verbally accepting; candidates who negotiate every clause of an offer after seeming enthusiastic at interview stage; references that are unreachable or evasive.

Understanding these normal ranges takes the guesswork out of both sides of the process — and it’s exactly why HireEast.ng builds status updates into every stage of the roles we manage, so neither job seekers nor employers are left wondering where things stand.

Want a hiring process where both sides always know where they stand? That’s what HireEast.ng is built for.
